Laurent Schuster Gelmetti is a French/Italian Italo-Disco and Eurobeat producer. He is most famously known under his alias Laurent Newfield. He was one of the founders of Delta Music Industry and the founder of Akyr Music. He was also a part of the groups Newfield & Sinclaire and Newfield-Moroni-Sinclaire.
Gelmetti's first foray into music production was at Time Records, where he was the second Audio Engineer behind Sandro Oliva, who then became the lead engineer after Oliva left Time. While he was an audio engineer, he'd assist with Mauro Farina, the main producer at Time at the time, and also work on projects for 3rd party labels with him such as Flea, Radiorama, and Asia Records. Mauro Farina would also give him the nickname "Laurent Newfield" after hearing him play guitar in the style of Mike Oldfield.
After an arguement between Time Records founder Giacomo Maiolini and Farina involving a potential sale of Time Records, Gelmetti would become the main producer for Time Records after his then girlfriend at the time, Clara Moroni, convinced Maiolini to allow him to run a studio and produce music from it, with some of his first productions including "Bang Bang" by Frank Torpedo, "Bad Girl" by Linda Ross, and "Black Power" by Maio & Co.
Gelmetti would continue producing Eurobeat at Time until around 1994, he'd go on a hiatus, with Sergio Dall'Ora mainly taking over for production. In 1995, he and Moroni would stumble upon then freelance producer Andrea Leonardi, where they discussed setting up their own label after being unhappy with pay at Time, which would become Delta. He'd produce 4 songs with Leonardi, before helping setting up a studio in Monza, Italy with Moroni to produce his own works.
In 1997, he'd produce his most famous Eurobeat song "Running In The 90s" by Max Coveri, with the assistance of Clara Moroni and Pamela Prondoni, with Maurizio De Jorio on vocals. Some other notable productions from that time also included "Remember Me", "Save Me" and "Killing My Love" by Leslie Parrish, "Don't Stand So Close" by Dr. Love, and "Burning Up For You" by Sara, all included in the anime Initial D.
In 2006 he'd form a side label called Akyr Music with Davide Di Marcantonio, which was discontinued in 2008, with its songs later acquired by Delta in 2023. Gelmetti would leave Delta after disputes with Avex, but returned in 2020, where he continued making Eurobeat until his retirement in 2024.
On November 12, 2024, Gelmetti announced his retirement from music industry along with his Laurent Newfield alias on his Facebook page titled "Italo Dance Mixmaster", with "Love Is A Killer" by Cherry and "Speed Devil" by Luke being his last songs produced under Newfield. Thus ends his 40-year career as a producer.[1]
